Heyla!

(I had tried to post this in the Help Desk section, but it seems I am unable to post there. This seemed like the next best place to post. I apologize if I made a mistake.)

I had attempted to install Enigma using the instructions for Windows from http://enigma-dev.org/download.htm. I had downloaded the first file, and just to be sure of things, I checked everything when installing it. While installing that first file, I got a notice saying that there was a newer version of something, catalogues, I believe, so I told it to install using that newer thing. I then downloaded the .zip file for enigma, clicked the "yes" button, and everything seemed fine, until it mentioned something about new libraries existing. I chose the "dev trunk" (or something to that effect), and waited, but the command window thingie then went and displayed some error messages. I took a screen shot of it, and included it as an attachment (I hope it attaches). I've tried, several times, to delete and re-extract the Enigma file. I even redownloaded the .zip file, several times. When I saw one thread, here, that mentions that updating just takes time, I left it alone for about 2 or three hours, but when I returned, it was still stuck at that same part with the error, which means nothing happened. So, what am I doing incompetently in the installation process?

If the information helps, I have the 32-bit version of Windows Vista, and I had gone through every executable program in the Enigma folder and gave it administation access. I had done the same with the folder created when installing that other file. But it doesn't seem to be an administrator access issue. So... I'm just a bit stymied. Any and all help in figuring this out is highly appreciated! Thank You!

TheKeeper

P.S.

I had tried to attach a picture of the error message, but it didn't work. So I'm providing a link from a Photobucket upload.

First of all, I think this information is more up to date (although the windows version seems to be the same): http://enigma-dev.org/docs/Wiki/Installation

Second of all, try putting ENIGMA in C:\ or something, because usually paths with spaces are not good (e.g. "Program files") although they should work fine. I don't think "!" in a path is good though.

Also, the whole project is based on revisions (versions if you will) and so its hard to choose which to download. The one in the download pages is ENIGMA-R4-r915-win.zip while the newest that worked fine on windows was 985 (like the one I am using). I can't really give you my copy as I modify all the time and I am not sure if you would not have other problems with it.

You can try it if you wish: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21117924/Enigma_mydev.rar
The size is a lot bigger because it has already compiled objects. So just extract (like in C:\ENIGMA just for test), delete \Compilers\Windows\gcc.ey and then launch it.

Oh, the file from the download page is not the most recent one? I tried searching the web site for a list of all the different versions of Enigma, but I didn't see one (although, that hardly means much, as I've been known to literally miss things that are right in front of me).

Anyhow, I'll give the version you have a try, as well as your other suggestions. Hopefully, one or a combination, thereof, will get things up and going.

=============

EDIT:

I had unpacked it into the main directory, as suggested, and deleted that one file you mentioned. Everything actually seemed to go fairly well, until I tried to compile the maze game that the download instructions suggested I try to make sure that it's compiling correctly. I got the following error message:

This application has failed to start because fmodex.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

So... What's fomodex.dll?

We'll probably be able to help you faster if you stop in at the IRC.

I'm not sure what fomodex is. If it were fmodex, I'd assume it were a sound DLL.

HaRRiKiRi: the two pages are exactly the same. http://enigma-dev.org/download.htm uses the Wiki API to query http://enigma-dev.org/docs/Wiki/Install and display the contents (Wiki/Installation redirects to Wiki/Install). All links and content on all 3 of those pages will always be exactly the same. Update one (namely Wiki/Install), and the other 2 automatically update.

I have not read the rest of this topic yet. Just wanted to point that out.

Also, why are you unable to post in the Help Desk Section?

Ah yes, sorry. My installation uses FMOD sound system, but as ENIGMA (or LGM?) sucks at working directories, then you need to have that DLL inside the temp directory (where the temporary .exe is when you run). Of course its just a lot easier to go into "Enigma settings->API->Audio" and change that to None or OpenAL. You will have to do that every time you launch LGM. A better solution is to change the default Sound system, but I can't remember how that was done (right now it just lists them alphabetically). Maybe Josh can shed some light on that.

edit: Ism, yeah I didn't actually read both pages. I just assumed that the Download page here is wrong (because it used to be).

I'd just like to point out that I can only help with the default installation from the download/install page. I cannot help with Harri's zip.

From your first error (the one you took a screenshot of), you are experiencing multiple problems. The first is that SvnKit is missing. Please confirm that "C:\Program Files\!Game Creation Software\ENIGMA-R4-r915-win\plugins\shared\svnkit.jar" exists. If it does, I suspect an issue with the path name (you should not have an exclamation mark in the path name, "!Game Creation Software" is not good, like Harri said. Try installing to C:\ENIGMA-R4-r915-win instead. Then report your progress.

Also, you shouldn't need to wait 2 hours. Once you see

Yeah, but mine should be working. I plan to make working ready to go zips for windows users. So they don't have to download things from 4 destinations then pray that they work. I think working packages like that are needed. The problem with the ones I share now is that they are not clean. They have already compiled .o and so on. So if I can get the newest GIT working then I will make a clean one.

That's fine. You're always welcome to do that and support it yourself. I just don't know what you put in it or such, so I probably can't help other people using it if something goes wrong - unless I happen to recognize the error message.

I don't know. When I had originally tried to post, there, I had a problem with getting my attachment included in the post. So, I redid the post with just the link from Photobucket, and it told me that I had already posted in the section. But I couldn't find the thread I had supposedly started, there. I tried to post, again, and, again, I got an error message (can't quite recall what it said, that time around), but, again, it wouldn't post. After all the frustrations I've been having with software, lately, I decided to simply not worry too much about it, and post here, instead, rather than stress, even further.

I may do that. But at the moment, I have other things going on, as well, so I'd hate to start up something like that, only to have to cut things short to tend to other things for several hours. Hence, the forum is something of a more comfortable means for me to seek aid, at the moment.

I unzipped it in the recommended location, but I still received the same error. After checking, I found the file svnkit.jar in the plugins\shared folder.

But my .zip is working fine if you set the AudioSystem to None? I am trying to build the newest GIT myself, when I have done that I will post that.

Harri's file worked, just fine, when I used his second recommended method for dealing with the error. I was able to compile the maze game (catch the clown seems to have some kind of error), as well as a game I had made in GM7, a couple of years back, when working through the tutorials.

The file I had downloaded from the download page on this web site is, as I mentioned, still not working. I believe the errors were the same, but I took another screen shot to be looked at.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd80/TheKeeper81/Misc/InstallationProblems3.jpg

Looking at the screen shot, the error mentions SvnKit, but the file I have is all lower-case. Would that make a difference?

Man, that's annoying. Rest assured, that problem concerns SVNkit, which we're moving away from. No one will ever have that damned error again as soon as we have a release from the Git.
