Title: Norse Adventures planing stage
Post by: edsquare on July 18, 2014, 05:58:11 pm
Found a really good viking sprite and I'm planing on using it as the main character for a game, let's see what you think.

Does he have animation? Because animating that seems like could take quite a skill. But I like it.

It does, I only need the being hit and dying animations, will need to see how easy to use is Synfig Studio, and if I can't do it like that I can always draw it by hand.

I find the ability to draw assets for video games by hand breaks down at about the point you need small, animated sprites. :P

Not if he doesn't settle for pixel shit and goes full HD. Edsquare you are a real artist I'm so happy I've found another one on these forums. You did that by hard and the lines are clean, perfect, no smudges or eraser makers, no holes in the paper. When I go fractional I bare down hard out of stubborn habbit and I mess up 100x through and my drawing usually looks good at the end but the paper is so messy and whatnot by that time. You have serious skill. I'd say you are much better an artist than I am. Like times 10. It's so neat. I'm stunned by the perfection. Look the comic book style "line shading".

Edsquare please make this as HD as your willing to take it so the gamers will have something beautiful to look at like the picture you've already posted. It's already obvious you have what it takes no doubt. Push your limits. This one will be worth a greenlight. No joke. I understand that traditional paper/pencil drawing you posted won't be a normal gameplay sprite, perhaps a splash or title screen instead but even then with smaller graphics for actual sprites it will still look petty damn good if you don't make them too small. I'm thinking on a range of 128x128 to 512x512 somewhere in there should be perfect.

Lets see:

You scan the drawing

Load it to Inkscape

Turn it to a SVG and then scale it to the size you need

Save it

Load it in Gimp and save it as PNG

And that's all folks!  :D

My points exactly dude. I think josh somehow got the impression you were going the 32x32 route.

First of all thanks for the praise, it's what we artists live for.  :)

It's so clean because I did it over and over again and some times I even cheated a bit and just copied something that I had gotten right in a previous iteration, no smudges or eraser marks because I used good paper, good pencils, good erasers and finally inked it and then used the eraser again. So no serious skill there (although at one point I did work about three months drawing comics here in México).

I was thinking about 128X128 and not bigger because I want it crisp but I also want you to be able to play it in relatively old hardware.

The picture I posted is at the original size, so I think that size is good enough.

I'm thinking in making it a platformer jump'n run/beat'em up mixture, what do you think?

I find that to be a really good idea. Maybe add some RPG elements in there like a selection of weapons, magic, or even armor it just depends how far you wanna go with it. I know it's gonna be a good game. You seem to know what you're doing. I don't know much about your game other than mostly the graphics but it's still impressive.

Just made this on the Gimp since it has no left facing images.

Idle Left:

Believe or not I had thought about that, but first I would need to remove the hammer of every single frame so he can fight with his fists alone, then as he gets points or solves a riddle or something he gets the power of Thor  :D and of course with that comes the hammer, and have him fight with :

Trolls
Fenrir
Ice Giants
The Midgard serpent Jörmungandr
Fire demons
even Hella

holy shit that was fast you're a fucking beast at artwork. I like all three characters but I like the first two especially they have a more well defined likeness that is both original and visually appealing. I wasn't expecting you do do the animation as good as your static images you already posted. The animation is smooth and adds more personality and posture to the characters. Excellent work. I have no complaints.

You didn't read the opening post did you?

I found the characters with their animations, they have animations facing only one side, so I'm doing the oposite side, in the vikings case so far only three frames of the idle left facing stance.

The viking also lacks being hit, falling, dying and a combo atack, I'll have to do those too, not too hard since all I'm really doing is cutting them with the gimp and then pasting those parts to form the new image. But to do the left facing walking viking I need to put the hammer in his left hand when he is looking that way, and even worst are the attacks, when he is swinging that huge hammer of his around. The most complete sprite is the Baron, as you can see it even has a combo attack.

I think the first version of the game will have to be with the animations I have, and just transform them to the other side, in the orks case it's no big deal since they are minions, but the Baron is the boss and the viking is the hero so I would prefer to have them looking right and not have their weapons magically apear on the oposite hand when they look the other way.

um yeah i did read it. I don't know how much of the animation you did or didn't do. I was under the impression that the image you got from open game arrt was the one in the first post, and that the walking sprites you did yourself while not going astray from the art style. reading the OP doesn't tell me enough and you showed off the animations as though you made them (you didn't specify their all from open game art)

edit: okay you got me I read the second and third post and you were right looks like you got me. oh poopy

I wasn't trying to get you, just not into taking credit for what others do, so the art is not mine and will be credited to the artist, he even said that if somebody did a good game he would be happy to make the missing animations, not sure I care to wait for the being hit, falling and dying animations of the viking tho.

even if you take someone's art, it was a single frame, you still made it into an animation, that takes skill, nothing wrong with that as long as you credit the original author of the still image, and take credit for the animation.
Some people are great with art, but not both (meaning animation).

I'd love to make walking and climbing sprites for my platforms but suck majorly when it comes to that.

So far the only animation I've done is four frames of the viking looking left.

I was serious with my offer, give me your sprite/drawing and I'll help you making the animations if you help me with my programming.

Synfig Studio isn't that hard to use, I may take the sprites and do them over on profile and use synfig to do the animation, paper mario like but still, a lot faster than doing some of the left animations for the viking would be. Just look at this:

Now imagine doing it so it looks right when facing the other way...  :o ???

Although now that I see it moving... It either has nipples on his back or he is a cousin of stretch or the elastic man, because then his right shoulder ends above his pectoral WTF?

Any way, what about this for a combo?

His back is hunched over plus he's fat so it looks like his nipple is attached to his armpit but it really isn't if you think about the pose and angle of the shot.

Did you do that combo animation? Looks pretty accurate.

I still think he has nipples in his back LOL!

I did it in the sense that I took the four atack animations that came with it and put them in a single folder, then uploaded it to convert to a gif.
