Being able to draw your own bounding box with a mouse is more of a UI feature, not non-UI... and it's part of the re-addition of being able to manually set the bounding box for the non-automatic ones. That wasn't in Beta 1, which annoyed a lot of people.

Also, it was originally going to be that everyone would have to pay to upgrade to GM8 unless they bought GM7 in June. The 2009 thing was an extension. Either way, it's extremely nice that they're letting anyone upgrade for free, because many many GM users haven't paid anything since GM6 or even GM5, and YoYo is an actual company, not a hobby project.

Game Maker should be free anyway; they should make money from advertising embedded in the game player plugin on their website, agreements to sell your game for a royalty, and providing support contracts or additional resources for educational deployments. Paying £15 once every few years wouldn't contribute a lot if they got those things right, meanwhile people could be turned off at having a crippled product.

Yoyo have had one and a half years of control, during which time they have produced a single minor update and a Mac port (and released nothing yet). Given how fast Josh has rewritten a lot of it from scratch in his spare time, a team of programmers employed solely to do it with access to the original codebase could easily have completed a similar rewrite that brings performance gains and simple portability to all platforms. The website is a good idea but they've been slow to turn it into a revenue source.

YoYo does make money from advertisements. But, they have not made a profit yet. Not in the entire time they've been around. No profit. They need money to pay their developers, and they would need money to implement new systems like selling users' games. If they don't get it from somewhere else first, they can't get it from any of those new systems. There is nothing wrong with Game Maker costing money.

NEWS: Game Maker 8 will not be free to users of Game Maker 7, unless you bought GM7 in 2009.
That's what this site is for!

And GM costs money, so what?  Should Adobe make Photoshop free because so many people pirate it?  Of course not!

Although I do agree with the fact that they could easily get five times the progress they have made.  Although they haven't.

Results from incompetence. Maybe they're expanding things as much as I am, and GM9 will support C++ too.
...GAHAHAHAHA

score_under--
We of the ENIGMA team do not support such piracy, yadda yadda, etc, etc. The ENIGMA team, in fact, discourages piracy, and posting pirated software here is prohibited... I'm having a hard time sounding all official on that due to the fact that I honestly don't care. But yknow, don't do that here.
