Title: I love Linux
Post by: time-killer-games on August 17, 2014, 02:42:08 pm
I now have two machines all to myself, one running Windows 7 and the other running Ubuntu 14.0. I'm beginning to really love Linux. Windows and Mac take like 8 minutes or more to boot, and about 4 to shut down. Ubuntu boots and shuts down in less than a minute. I also really like the taskbar. When you have like ten huge windows open every bit of screen area counts, especially if you need to see multiple of those windows simultaneously. The new Ubuntu taskbar auto-hides when not in use which really helps me take advantage of every pixel to clutter. I love how Qt is shipped with OS, which leaves zero need to redistribute tons of dll's like you have to for Windows and Mac Qt apps.

What do you like about Linux? :D

I like that fact that I don't use it.

Well, at least I thought everyone here had similar feelings. What do you prefer Ex?

Freedom ! You have a lot of distros and for each distro you can choose a different graphical interface. With windows, if you don't like their latest version with tiles, you're f***d or you need to install new applications in order to get rid of this crap.
Also, with Linux you don't get virus ! With windows, you need often to re-install your PC, even if you are careful, as the OS is infected all the time ! You have anti-viruses of course, but it's far from being a perfect protection. And finally, i like very much the idea of open-source software.
I've a PC with a dual boot between Linux Mint and Windows. I try to use much as possible Linux. Sometimes it's not possible, as i need to use software like Photoshop.

Yeah, I really like being able to customize window borders and control appearances if I ever want to, makes it nice. I agree if more big companies like Adobe cared enough to port all their best software to Linux, I wouldn't use windows for anything other than Windows game ports. If GMS's IDE ran on Linux along with everything else I need I'd be a full-time Linux user.

I really like the customizability of it as well. Don't like Unity? Try Gnome or KDE or XFCE or LXDE or...

If it were possible to get all of my software running successfully under Linux, I would switch to it in a heartbeat. However as a game developer, you are often platform locked. E.g. Windows Phone, iPhone.

TKG, if your Windows 7 takes 8 minutes to load and 4 minutes to shut down you have a very serious issue mate.   What are your system specs ? That's bloody awful, I would think even the crappiest of machines would boot faster. :P

I don't even have SSD and my Win7 boots in less than 20 seconds full to desktop and I have lots of drivers and stuff installed.

Personally Win7 is my favourite windows OS, no complaints here......I have a rock solid and stable system.  My 2 top rock solid OSes, Windows XP SP3 and Win7. I've done film work, editing, and hardcore stuff for years and never had any issues.

Older versions of GM run on wine, it's on synaptic (Software Manager) or on the terminal sudo apt-get install wine.

Being able to customize your desktop is a huge pro, also the lack of nocive fauna, but for me the selling point is freesoftware, free as in speach and as in beer. Qt never did it for me I'm a Gnome fan, or moere precisely was, since gnome3 I switched to cinammon and never loked back.

Linux handles installed libraries and packages beautifully, the way it should be. There is literally no Windows equivalent, there are attempts at one but they just suck in comparison. I consider it to be a major fault in the majority of software which happens to be Windows. Not everything has this problem, DirectX is installed so those apps are not really an issue, but engines like Irrlicht or OGRE are because they don't have a runtime installer you have to redistribute it which is nonsense.

Yes but ... Debian is always 2 or more years behind the cutting edge software, it also is less user friendly.

That said . . . Ubuntu Sucks big time! And Unity sucks too!

Long live LinuxMint and Cinnamon!  :D

Debian Testing is actually pretty up to date and nearly as stable. Debian Stable releases are more for super-critical applications that don't care about up to date stuff.

Arch Linux

Come on guys. I use Arch but Ubuntu is fine, especially for newbies. Unity is OK too (though I use Awesome).
