Title: Hardware Diagnosis
Post by: Goombert on March 28, 2013, 03:32:17 am
I am currently attempting to gather some statistics regarding our user's hardware compatibility with different graphic's libraries.

The glew test can allow me to gather what OpenGL version and extensions your graphics card supports. If you could please download that from this page. For Windows you can just download the binary version.
http://glew.sourceforge.net/index.html

Now you want to go into bin/Release/x64 or Win32 and then double click glewinfo.exe and a text file containing your OpenGL support will be generated.

And if you are on Window's device's please also run a DirectX Diagnosis by simply opening the start menu and either searching for dxdiag or open run and entering "dxdiag.exe"

When you finish both of those test's please http://www.pastebin.com the result's and post the link in this topic with your hardware/operating system spec's. Please make sure you set the paste to not expire so that we can review all of your results in the future if we come back to this topic. This will help us best determine how to work out our graphic's system's and it would be greatly appreciated  :)

Here is the steam survery....

Yes that's wonderful thank you very much  (Y)

After analysing your diagnosis I believe you should be able to run shader's fine under both our DirectX (DX not useable yet) and OpenGL graphics systems, I am unsure about whether your hardware supports "Vertex Buffers", but assuming your PC handles our surface function's I think you should be good  :)

Thanks forthevin, I think your pretty good to go for VBO's and shader's  (Y)

I'd run the test myself if I knew how to compile that thing from source  :D

There isn't anything that shouldn't work on your card, your completely good to go,  :)

For Robert and others who may be on Ubuntu, I found a package called glew-utils which provides both "glewinfo" and  "visualinfo", making it less bothersome to get the diagnostics :- ).

I can think of two ways to go about getting it to display all the text. In the terminal, there is usually a limit to how many lines it stores for viewing. This can usually be changed in a setting in the terminal. The second way is to redirect the output of "glewinfo" into a temporary file by using the following command in the terminal: "glewinfo > glew_paste". That redirects the output from "glewinfo" from the terminal output to the file named glew_paste. With all the output stored in glew_paste, glew_paste can simply be opened by some text editor (for instance "gedit"), and the content can then be copy-pasted from there.

I got my dxdiag results in my Windows VM I set up today...

Heres glew on my VM...

not one bit surprising to me that windows wants to lie about my OpenGL compatbility  :-[

Anyways, thanks forthevin, and apparantly me you and Josh are perfectly fine, I already know my real OGL capability, despite Window's blatant lies. Gra I unable to determine if you have the support or not as you did not paste the entire log.  ???

Thank you both very much this information is very helpful! After looking over your reports you should both be fine with Shaders and Vertex Buffer Objects and using all of the hardware acceleration we're working on  :) The reason for this study was because Steam says that %78 of their userbase has this capability of hardware, and we want to see for ourselves, and for the most part I guess it's a pretty solid statistic.

Thanks guys, this topic is old, but thanks for posting anyway!

egofree, you have nice hardware, you won't have any problems with graphics systems and can use the OpenGL3 system for hardware acceleration.

There are some misleading info in the sound aspect as I have my soundcard panel settings to movie/music mode, otherwise if I were to select game mode, you would see all the EAX and extra goodies enabled such as EAX (all versions up to 5).

Yeah I think I'm due to upgrade in a couple of months lol!

Sometimes I wonder what good is to have all those GPU capabilities if none gets used or only a fraction of a hardware's power is used....When was the last time you ran an OpenGL 4 capable game ? Let alone OGl3! :D

Last year I purchased my ASUS GTX 1070 Turbo 8GB -  This year it is $400 more bloody expensive !!! All because of the crypto miners - bloody fucks - the PC gaming industry is doomed and killed now by the miners, now the high-end gaming cards go over $1k-$1.5k - what a big cluster fuck of a situation - So I guess NVIDIA should stop using the terms GAMING they might as well label their product line Crypto Mining, gaming on PC is over, thank you miners !!  The only alternative is low end and low/mid in other words utter shite - really hurts for someone who has an 8GB card - the thought of me having to purchase a 3GB/4GB card which is less powerful than what I have next time I upgrade makes me SICK!  So to all of you who's Commodore 64, AMIGAS, Atari, etc, gathering dust, don't throw them away yet, they might become useful eventually.

How long has this been going on? Have you run example games (eg, from the EDC)?

I helped him on Discord, I think his Mesa driver was out of date, but we did get GL3 working again for him. If you look at the glew info he pasted, it clearly supports GL 3.0, not 3.3. Our GL3 system is 3.3 minimum but I can't recall exactly why. I just remember TheExDeus asking us about making it the minimum.
