« on: January 02, 2009, 04:11:59 am »FALSE! 9x and NT are both programs running in DOS. So is ME. (Proof: On a non-ACPI PC, shut down but don't power off. It will tell you it's safe to power off. type "cls" then press enter. Lo and behold, MS-DOS.)
FINE. You win. However NT doesn't run on DOS; that's why it's NT.

Yes, I know, but you need to run a full, graphical Windows desktop to get the Windows command line up to run Lynx on 9x/NT. Linux and other Unix-like OSs don't need that.

Even Windows 98 supported that.I have it on purpose, so that everything runs as smoothly as possible. I don't really care about fancy stuff. In fact, I hate Windows Aero and its competitors; it looks ugly and slows everything down for the sake of a nicer interface.

Linux can be far, far lighter than Windows if you want. You don't even need graphics.
For example, Lynx Web Browser:

Lack of Linux version. Also lack of commitment to open source in general (Chrome != Chromium).

Wait a minute; you use VB.NET? How are you going to make that work on consoles, mobiles, etc.? .NET is a proprietary Microsoft-only technology.

That is a really bad example that shows off how much your program sucks. You can't even do proper transparency. Also, you've just shown everyone how to infringe copyright in their spare time. And you want to play that on consoles?

General ENIGMA / Re: Writting Enigma's IDE in C#
« on: November 27, 2008, 11:49:15 am »Well I stand corrected then.
I don't have much experience with Linux anyway, and I just know of things like Beagle (it IS Beagle, right..?), Tomboy, etc...
Oh, yes, you can write apps like Beagle and Tomboy in Mono (though due to the patents issue it's not worth it), but it can't really be called .NET compatible.

Proposals / Re: Some things just have to be deprecated
« on: November 27, 2008, 11:40:53 am »allowing things besides var would leave it just as backwards compatible, it would just also add new features.
If that was in reply to me, I know that. I'm only against 'deprecation', i.e. not being able to even use the previous format.

ENIGMA has to be fully Game Maker compatible otherwise its use will be confined to a very small group. We need to have ENIGMA as a drop-in replacement that any GM user could pick up and understand. The only visible difference to the average user should be the gamemaker_registered=1 constant.
I fail to see how your thing couldn't be done using the C++ tags.

General ENIGMA / Re: Writting Enigma's IDE in C#
« on: November 27, 2008, 04:45:41 am ».NET/Mono is yet another thing Microsoft/Novell made that only works in Windows/Linux, which really pisses off developers.
No. Mono is NOT a valid alternative to .NET. Mono doesn't even fully support the first version of .NET, never mind the subsequent ones. Also, almost all real-world .NET programs use a mixture of .NET and WinAPI, so you need Wine too (and that isn't even properly native). Anyone that uses Mono has the threat of MS's software patents to deal with. The 'protection' from the Novell deal only extends to Novell paying customers.
Besides, C# isn't actually better than Java, so there's no point switching even if .NET was open (lol) and cross-platform.

« on: November 25, 2008, 02:22:44 pm ».NET is only slightly worse than Java for the IDE imo because I don't like installing the JRE >_>
MonoDevelop lol.

Announcements / Re: ENIGMA -- srs bizness
« on: November 23, 2008, 01:18:52 pm »RetroX:
A=floor(rand());
B/A;
How is one to make a compile time error there?
Very easily. Take the range of the values rand() returns, and have the compiler spawn that many instances of the executable, ecah one with a different value, inside virtual machines. If there is more than one such function, simply create a virtual machine for each pair of possible values. Any conceivable ENIGMA application should only require a few trillion test cases. But you could be ABSOLUTELY confident that no runtime errors would happen.
EDIT: It should be obvious I am joking. If not, then I assure you I am.
