Issues Help Desk / LGM -> Enigma link broken
« on: January 28, 2014, 05:11:23 pm »
I just downloaded the newest version of the self extracting exe and after LGM called the compiler for a while, a message popped up saying "Call to 'defines' toolchain executable returned non-zero!" This message appears every time I run LGM. Play button etc are grayed out.

Of course YYG is about money, they're a company. Mike has said multiple times he's tired of Delphi himself, and said GM:Next was going to be written in something else (most likely VS and cross platform via Mono). In regards to the one size fits all approach would you really want to start an entirely different IDE each time you wanted to test the game on a different platform? And besides, mobile is the gold rush atm, so yeah it makes sense they have exports there. If you're using GM for Windows, you can stop there, I don't see why you're complaining about them having mobile exports. The YYC I won't disagree, is a complete rip off.

Jimmy, you seem to have a very negative view of both GM and ENIGMA, so why use either? You say most games from them are shit, which honestly is true. There are some fantastic games made with GM (Hotline Miami, Stealth Bastard, Gun Point, and the original Spelunky). Sure you can look at these and call them "retro" because they're 2d -- the fact is, both GM and ENIGMA were designed for 2d games, not 3d. Both ENIGMA and GM support shaders. so yeah it's possible to create a high res 2d game with some beautiful effects. Just because a piece of software is powerful doesn't mean the user will be intelligent enough to utilize it.

Off-Topic / Re: What is a good programming language to start off with?
« on: January 12, 2014, 05:17:27 pm »
GML and PHP were my first programming languages. Dynamic typing and loose syntax in the case of GML allowed things to mostly "just work". It was good for me, as I learned some of the basic concepts and structures of programming without having to worry about much else.

Wow, I never knew Unity's 2d system optimized vertices / polygons like that. Might be enticing to use it over GM for very heavy 2d games...

I think this is usually done with raycasting (it's what I've used, at least), but there's no implementation in enigma at the moment so you'd have to roll it yourself.

But in place of their wiki, they uploaded the manual: http://docs.yoyogames.com/
Granted, I much prefer a wiki.

You have a lot of hate and quite a mouth tkg. Religion is a touchy subject, you should have expected some debate in such a thread.
Also on the topic of science again (in reference mainly to egofree), it's true we don't know a lot about the universe. The bible doesn't explain dark matter either, or the intricacies of the atom. People used to think the sun was a god until we discovered what it was. People used to think the world was flat. People used to think the solar system (or universe) revolved around our little planet.
We learn all the time. When we find something we don't know about, we develop theories that best explain them. And they're theories because we don't know for sure. We may never have a physics theory/law which explains every form of matter and force in the universe.
There is no reason to use "we don't know for sure how x works" as evidence for a deity existing. Since their existence cannot be proved or disproved, I always find debates about religions an exercise in futility.

Religion is a very personal topic, I don't see the point in trying to convert people to / from one. I like some of the ideologies present in many religions. Morals are good to have for a stable society. The problem I have with the Christian god is that he/it is overly cruel, and most Christians seem to ignore it.
In terms of scientific evidence, let's say it's lacking on all sides. However when people wonder about evolution, it is still a theory. It is however the most widely accepted theory due to the discovered evidence. Yes people can go on about missing links, but what do they give in return? Poof people were here. The fact is, microevolution has been observed, it is not hard to see how macroevolution could be possible (imo).
The old earth vs. new earth is a matter of rather pointless debate. Even Christians debate among themselves which they think is right. If you take the Bible completely literally (which I think is foolish), the earth was made in 7 days, end of story. Of course believing in a god that can do anything it's not a hard pill to swallow, just take it as fact. But, who's to say how long he took to make the universe or earth anyway. Maybe a day was really a thousand years. IMO that doesn't matter at all for religion or debates.
Any deeper of a religious / philosophical debate seems pointless. "Professionals" have been doing this for decades with no real results on either side. If you want to question your faith, more power to you -- but don't let anyone else try to convince you of something.

I just want commits tested before they're submitted. Rapid development does not have to mean "untested". Sometimes it's hard where you change one thing which causes another to break, which is why it would also be nice to eventually get back to stable releases.

Hello, Ism. Good to see you and hope life's treating you well. I agree completely with your post. I might hop back on the contribution train myself in an effort to produce a more bug-free product.

Controls are kind of irritating. For a 3rd person view like this I'd recommend going with WASD for char control, with mouse rotating camera.
I guess it's a nice start to the game, lot missing it seems. No point in lives, no game over scenario, rotating platforms that I don't think are reachable yet.
I do like 3rd person platformers though so I'd like to see this expanded eventually.

General ENIGMA / Re: List your main problems with ENIGMA and what you want to see added
« on: December 09, 2013, 02:41:05 pm »The bottleneck is the way resources are sent to ENIGMA. If your game takes five minutes to compile, 4 minutes and 45 seconds are Java formatting the resources. On Windows, Java donates 20 seconds of that to make checking whether files have changed.Yes, I've "resorted" to keeping nearly all files external to save my sanity.

Issues Help Desk / Re: Merging unfinished changes
« on: December 09, 2013, 02:38:35 pm »It's not worth making a stable until after JDI is finished.Seems like I'm gonna die before that happens.
3) Watch program output and whether the project compiled - write Jenkins (or other) compatible output for web interface.Great intentions, but that's mostly impossible. How do you test that something got drawn to the screen correctly?
If that would of been set up it would of slowly been made. You don't need 5000 tests cases at once. Even 1 would in most cases tell you if something broke.
We have users now who don't pull except once in a blue moon because they're sick of all the broken shit. We constantly have regressions. My last pull was from 11/17 for this reason.
