How is LateralGM deficient, in your opinion?

There is such a thing. SuperPI. It calculates pi. And it heavily favours Intel chips, by a huge margin compared to what we see in real-world use. AMD is more ahead in games. If you can't produce numbers to back your position up... I am an AMD fan. I want to see AMD competitive with Intel. But I am completely against unsourced claims on either side.

Look. AMD and Intel are equally good for dev work, don't know where you got otherwise from. They are similar in real power consumption, ignore the wattage ratings as AMD is more conservative. All that matters is price, and performance, of the whole platform (since good AMD mobos are cheaper).
Here is the value chart. As you can see, an AMD system is slightly better value where they are competing, and above that you pay a large premium for faster performance with the i7 line. If you need an i7 for workstation, CPU-intensive tasks then it's worth it; if you game, AMD's are often faster than the i7s and the system price is cheaper.

Meant Pentium D. Still think I'm right on that.

Within an architecture, yes. Between them, it's another factor but you can't tell much from it. For example, 1.8GHz C2D > 3.4GHz P4. You have to look at non-synthetic benchmarks.

Seriously, both AMD and Intel's best processors are 64-bit, quad core, 3.2GHz, except Intel's is $1200 and AMD's is $200. And the AMD one is better and more efficient. :/
I'm an AMD fan, so I'd love if that were true, but CPU performance is not really related to the clockspeed. AMD's 3.4GHz Phenom II (they increased it by 200MHz yesterday) performs similarly to Intel's 2.66GHz Core i7 or 3.0GHz Core 2 Quad. This problem was reversed a few years ago when a 2.4GHz Athlon 64 performed similarly to a 3.8GHz Pentium 4.
AMD do tend to be better at the price point they're at in both CPU and graphics though. They're not ahead in either market in raw performance terms.

Have you tried the Nouveau driver, Josh?

How does calling that God help? If I rename watermelons to God, does that add anything to my life? I think you don't believe in God but you don't want to let go of being brought up in a religion and the moral/cultural/social systems it provided.

« on: August 11, 2009, 04:09:04 am »That's why you must define "GOD' in your own way and not use ANY religion to do it for you. I wouldn't say I'm an atheist; I do believe in "GOD" just I don't believe he's this higher entity who rules over everything, just simply 'the thing' that created life. Which I don't know what is yet.
Anyways isn't this all going OFF-topic?
Here's my question: is your concept of God supernatural? That is, does it suspend natural laws, determinism, or "live outside the universe"? If it does, how could you believe in it, as all phenomena we have found so far (have evidence for) are deterministic etc. If it doesn't, then God is an unnecessary concept and instead of natural laws -> God -> life you could just eliminate the middle step to make it simpler and therefore more likely. [Occam's razor].

I still think it's worse that they've split the game's campaign into three parts all of which are full retail price. And there are rumours the new Battle.net will cost money too.
I'm just boycotting Activision altogether because of the CEO's actions. He put up the price of retail games in the UK to £55 (that's $91 USD) and has said he'd like to see prices even higher, he's dropped original games because, I quote, they can't be turned into yearly-installment $100m franchises, and because he doesn't take the Wii seriously (GH and CoD on Wii have been unreasonably* cut down despite great sales and it being the biggest platform by far).
*The Wii is more powerful than the original Xbox, has motion control and the ability to have 99% of the DLC and online features that the other two have. Neither GH nor CoD look better than PS2 titles on the Wii, they skip over Wii for DLC and don't make use of motion control. And the online is lacking.

« on: July 25, 2009, 02:56:36 pm »Also, it was originally going to be that everyone would have to pay to upgrade to GM8 unless they bought GM7 in June. The 2009 thing was an extension. Either way, it's extremely nice that they're letting anyone upgrade for free, because many many GM users haven't paid anything since GM6 or even GM5, and YoYo is an actual company, not a hobby project.
Game Maker should be free anyway; they should make money from advertising embedded in the game player plugin on their website, agreements to sell your game for a royalty, and providing support contracts or additional resources for educational deployments. Paying £15 once every few years wouldn't contribute a lot if they got those things right, meanwhile people could be turned off at having a crippled product.
Yoyo have had one and a half years of control, during which time they have produced a single minor update and a Mac port (and released nothing yet). Given how fast Josh has rewritten a lot of it from scratch in his spare time, a team of programmers employed solely to do it with access to the original codebase could easily have completed a similar rewrite that brings performance gains and simple portability to all platforms. The website is a good idea but they've been slow to turn it into a revenue source.

NEWS: Game Maker 8 will not be free to users of Game Maker 7, unless you bought GM7 in 2009.
Also, GM8 Beta 2. The important new, non-UI feature is that you can draw your own bounding box with a mouse (don't know how that works exactly)
Changelog:
* You can now change the background of the main form by placing a file back.bmp in the main folder.
* You can now set in the preferences how long to wait before showing the function completion help.
* In the image editor, double clicking on the preview image now opens a separate preview window.
* Added a variable gamemaker_version. Current value is 800.
* Extended the tutorials mechanism to allow for multiple tutorials.
* You can now use high quality icons for your games.
* For the code editor there is now an option in the preferences whether you want to allow the cursor beyond the end of a line of text.
* Added functions disk_size(drive) and disk_free(drive).
* When defining triggers there is now an option to edit them in the code editor.
* You can now indicate in the preferences to show the news in the default browser.
* Collision mask definition has been changed. Makes it compatible with past and adds bounding box options back in (plus possibility to draw them with mouse).
* Changed the window caption to first show the name of the game. Also show this correctly in the Task Bar.
* With autocompletion in the code editor you can now use the mouse wheel to scroll through the options.
