Title: Windows 10
Post by: Goombert on October 01, 2014, 08:12:17 am
http://venturebeat.com/2014/09/30/windows-10-is-microsofts-big-fat-apology-for-windows-8/

I guess somebody at Microsoft can't count...

I'll concede, I am actually very excited for Windows 10, the quicker we kill Vista along with XP the better. Additionally I like the task switcher button, that is a really awesome new feature that should have been in Windows 8 honestly. It technically is you just don't see it without ALT+TAB. Plus a workspace switcher like Ubuntu, that was one of my favorite Ubuntu features.

Also there's finally going to be CTRL+C and other clipboard shortcuts and stuff for Command Prompt. I can't wait I really might sign up for the developer preview just to get my hands on it.

If you read the entire article it is mentioned they will skip version 9 and call it 10. :D
Mind you they could have simply listened to their customers during the first months and made those changes to 8.1 and service packs.
But I can understand why they will call it 10 and not 9.......lol.

Every M$ OS is bloat ware, I have always used tools to trim the fat, even windows 7 with tools like RT7lite, Windows 7 Manager and many others - I hope eventually it will be possible to remove and trim fat.  That OS will probably come out of the box with tons of running services and tasks most people won't use......I wonder how that OS will perform for gaming compared to Windows 7.

And last I heard Windows 8 users will get free upgrades to 10.  (those who actually paid for 8 that is !) lol.

Actually, one thing that was true and was great about 8 is they already begun trimming some of the fat and boot times are a lot quicker. They did improve the performance quite a bit and they also fixed that issue where you have to refresh when moving a desktop icon. I am quite satisfied with where the Windows OS is going. The only thing I need left as a developer is a comprehensive package manager and I would probably never switch off this OS.

Also, Windows is not that big really, it only occupies 18.6 GB (19,976,860,691 bytes) of my diskspace which is actually quite small, about the size of two GTA IV installations.

A person in an IRC channel shared this as a possible reason for skipping 9:

Haha, that's funny DaSpirit, I honestly think they should have gone with "Windows One"

Does anybody else think the titlebar icons are starting to look a lot like Gnome?

MS version names have always been fucking stupid.

If windows 8 users really are getting the free upgrade, I'm getting windows 8 asap.

Yes, unfortunately it is starting to look Gnome-esque. Hopefully this kind of title-bar is limited to Metro apps only.

I personally like flat themes, but Windows is starting to look too flat. I think the new start menu looks horrendous.

Windows, including the start menu, looks way better than Gnome, IMO. Gnome overdoes gradients and rounding, and makes everything slightly too big. It is a little odd that Modern apps would have a different title bar, though.

Actually, that makes a lot of sense.

(And not a lot of sense at the same time) If people are worried that programs intended for Windows 95 & 98 won't work properly on Windows 9, then all I can say is LOL.  ???

DaSpirit, you are right, look at the taskbar it's a solid color, Windows is definitely too flat.

Rusky, I agree about the roundness definitely, they do overdo it.

Personally I would like a mix of flat with some slight gradients mixed in with Windows 7 glass look. The glass look will always be my personal favorite, arguments that it's slow to render are simply ludicrous since Vista it was hardware accelerated. The only thing I really dislike are ellipse's and round edges, I do in fact like squares because they fit perfectly together, I also hate round radars in video games. So Windows 8 developers keep the square windows, add some minor gradients to things and reactivate glass!

Still could be in trouble here though.

Win 95 - Crap
Win 98 - Good
Win ME - Crap
Win XP - Good
Win Vista - Crap
Win 7 - Good
Win 8 - Crap
Win 9 - Good (but not released)
Win 10 - Crap

See a pattern?

If they skip release of 9, then we are in for another crap OS in a row  :D

Actually it's just more marketing hype, win 10 will be win 8 revamped......what should have been win8........it will actually be win8 without the default metro UI for desktop and some changes such as cloud computing integration, etc. Performance wise will it be any different than Win8, I have yet to see but I don't think it will be much different.....Win10 is Win8 on heavy plastic surgery :P

7, 8, and 8.1 all improved performance noticeably; I'd be surprised if 10 didn't.

you mean 10 compared to 8.1, I'd be surprised if there is any significant performance increase, but we'll see.

At this point in time, I am honestly afraid to download, I think I'll wait I have too much important stuff going on.

Great, I will play along, I'll set up a test partition and give this a try this weekend and report back :D

edsquare, you tried a beta OS on a physical disk? D:

From my point of view every version of windows is a beta version (Well okey vista was an alpha version but still . . . )  :D , hell some "Final" versions of Ubuntu (When I still used it) were beta versions too.  ;)

Didn't we all do stupid things like that on our computers? Or were you born a software engineer from your mum's womb ? :D

Yeah I'm actually going to dare try this MF out later this evening......I have a fresh spanking brand new SATA3 drive I will test this on, but this is an early stage, things can change to the RTM, so I'm not expecting flawless not even close lol

Partially correct.  Vista was pre-alpha :P
the rest, beta and its users as guinea pigs.
I guess one could say the same about other software too.....:D

No not necessarily - I'm thinking some software in general that are very buggy and poorly tested.

As to YYG let's give them credit when due, they made some very positive changes lately.
Version 1.4 is not officially released, and lots of interesting changes with the IDE that any LGM user would have wet dreams about :P
but with every positive change comes the negatives i'm afraid so yeah, work in progress.....But we should not talk, as ENIGMA is a WIP too lol!

Not a fair comparision, since LGM/ENIGMA is a FOSS and heavily understaffed. A much better comparision would be between :

Autodesk 3ds Max (formerly 3D Studio MAX) / Autodesk Maya vs Blender (if you insist in making it closed source vs FOSS)

Also ENIGMA is not a WIP, it's in Beta stage, when it's in release stage then it would be more of a fair comparision, since any software you sell is supposed to be in this stage.

Well I finally downloaded the ISO. burned it (luckily I had some old cheap crap DVD lying around, as I did not want to waste some good Taiyo Yuden Premium discs!) :D I have some spare brand spanking new SATA2 drives lying around, set it in my eSATA case, brand new non formatted drive, I will disable my main drive and make the full install on that new drive, no VM crap, I want to test this on a physical drive, native hardware, everything.  So if worse comes to worse I just remove that drive, and reactivate my main one, no harm done.

That's how I always tested shit, never did it on my primary drive (but no worries, I've done far worse mistakes lol!)

So there, if nobody hears from me in a couple of days this means I lost my sanity, and windows 10 is to blame.....So assuming I'm still sane and my hardware does not explode :P I will be back to report with my comments on this technical preview.

Wish me luck ! :D :D :D
