Title: Introductions
Post by: Josh @ Dreamland on March 16, 2011, 09:34:35 am
In an effort to end this forum's war on spam, I've made it so it's virtually impossible to spam until you've made a post. The side effects of that include the inability for new members who are here legitimately to edit their profile or do other personalizations one would typically do upon registration. So, this topic is for humans who would like to have somewhere legitimate to post so they can edit their profiles and use the messaging systems.

So yes, say hi, and say something to make the admins think you're here because you are genuinely interested in what goes on here.

Well, I suppose this is as good as place as ever to make a first post. So, hi. I'm Jay Bolte, and I finally made an account here on the forums. I've been hanging around your IRC channel and website for nearly a week now, and I really am interested in this project. I would like to learn more about programming to be able to help out in some way.

Hi Jbolte. I think there was a special forum for this before, but I think its deleted now.

Anyway, I am glad (and others are too I suppose) that there is one more person interested in development. If you have any programming experience then you probably could end up helping. For example, I use C++ very rarely and actually only when I am helping here. Still, I am able to create functions and share with them. You could maybe also write something in the wiki. I usually document the functions I make myself, but there probably are things you can add.

Hello everyone. I'm very interested in using ENIGMA and judging by how it's treated me so far, I think I might want to switch to it from GM. (EDIT 2: I realize that I might have to wait a tiny bit further into its development.) I've used LateralGM in the past but only for its Defrag IDs function.

EDIT: Oh and I've been using Game Maker since I was 10. :P (I was young so I was probably just changing sprites in tutorial games for the first few years and then using drag and drop for the next few until I went to GML.)

EDIT 3: Fair warning - I'm obsessed with toucans.

Post by: TheExDeus on August 03, 2011, 01:08:33 pm
Hello! Great that ENIGMA is treating you good (because a boy called cheeseboy gets rejected by it in any way possible). But the best thing about ENIGMA is that you can add your own functions (even temporary ones if you are waiting for the devs themselves to implement them) so if you know C++ or want to learn while writing code, then you can create everything you need or want.

I am waiting for extensions system to blossom, so then I will be able to hook up paths once and for all. If that doesn't happen in the next few days, then I will commit path functions anyway, as you can still use them just fine.

And why are you obsessed with toucans? You have one? Or two? Or more?

Heyla!

I had Game Maker 7 Pro, but due to real life obligations, I hadn't been able to do much, with it. Now, my interest in Game Maker has been rekindled, but because I don't want to purchase Game Maker 8.1, I decided to see if there was a file converter that will allow me to make use of examples and tutorials that made use of GM8 on GM7 Pro. That's how I came across Enigma/LateralGM.

It's an interesting program, though, and I have hopes of actually using both it and my copy of GM7 Pro (that is, once pro activation issues have been resolved). And since I've already come across some issues with installing Enigma, I figure I may as well make an account with the forum, as this very likely won't be the last time I may need help and advice.

Anyhow, that's about it. But before I end this post, I would like to extend my thanks to IsmAvatar and Josh @ Dreamland for taking the time to create something free for use for those who would love to one day make their game ideas a reality.

Welcome to the project. I hope we can help you resolve your installation issues. We've been having a few of them latetly, so we've been spending some time trying to improve the process so it goes more smoothly in the future. It's to be expected, since the project isn't really done yet. But it's still *very* usable. Many users have already created a good number of games and even submitted them to some Game Maker competitions.

Title: Hello There
Post by: gringo on April 16, 2012, 06:32:25 am
Hi,

I just found this project last night while looking into a way to get GM running on linux either under wine or virtual box, when I came across a post mentioning LGM from my reading there I ended up here.

Must say I'm quite impressed with what you have achieved so far and would like to help out, managed to get everything downloaded and built this morning. However the two recommended test games die horribly and fail to compile, reading the output and the forum this would seem to have something to do with the sound system and your move to git, all of which I'm sure would be fixed soon.

That aside though I'd like to help out, I've had a look at the todo list and thought I'd start small and sort out the have a brain stuff, had a look in the source and it looks like a quickish set of tasks. For some of the more advanced stuff where knowledge of Enigma is required is there any sort of primer to get a new developer up to speed?

In the progress no brainer section there is a requirement to branch some of the existing drawing function...

Branch the draw_SHAPE functions into sets of outline_SHAPE and fill_SHAPE functions to eliminate* `bool outline` (concerning SHELL/Graphics_Systems/OpenGL/GSstdraw.h). Alternative: draw_SHAPE_outline/draw_SHAPE_fill. (* Not really eliminate, just replace the need for. The outline argument would become optional)

Why not just wrap each of these instead, the function to draw is already there why not just introduce two new function that call the existing function with and without the optional arg?

either way this is pretty much done, having a look at the make files now.

Title: Re: Introductions
Post by: TheExDeus on April 16, 2012, 09:34:31 am
I am still not sure why Josh wanted to branch these two functions. As far as I know he wanted three functions? Like one is the current one (for compatibility and ease of use) and then two functions that is FILL and OUTLINE. I don't see how that would really increase speed, as usually the difference between an outline and filled is just one If statement. So I don't think you should worry about that. You could try making some functions which are either missing for GM compatibility, or new functions which are not in GM but useful. I did most of the drawing stuff and I think ENIGMA is at the point it can be used very efficiently to make any game you could think of.

Also, what exactly were the problems that you couldn't run test games? If it just was the sound system and so on, then try setting Sound System to "None" in Enigma settings (via LGM) and then try again. Switch to GIT created so much chaos and no one is willing to fix anything. Windows, for example, is significantly broken. But someone will get around to it eventually.

edit: Also there is not much you need to get to speed. Just the loacations as there are a lot of useless folders. All of the drawing stuff (including all of the drawing functions) is in ENIGMAsystem\SHELL\Graphics_Systems\OpenGL.
ENIGMAsystem\SHELL\Universal_System has generic  multiplatform functions (like math, string, pathfinding, and resource functions).
ENIGMAsystem\SHELL\Platforms has platform specific functions. Like window functions as each platform can use different window system and the system calls and callbacks (keyboard and mouse) is different on different systems as well.

You can also check audio_system and collision_systems for audio and collision respectively. Though not really much to do there (mby adding polygon collision or pixel perfect collision?).
Title: Re: Introductions
Post by: gringo on April 16, 2012, 12:53:32 pm
Hi HaRRiKiRi,

I've done some digging around today and done some things on the list, I've done all the drawing changes in the working brain section anyways as it was simple enough and why not get started on something. Just had a flick through the GM manual for version 8 and there are a few functions missing from the drawing function so it seams like a good place to start implementing things.

In my test run the whole openAL class seems foobared, i've tried setting the audio setting to none but to no avail. I'll play around later and see where I get. I would paste the error but for some reason Ubuntu won't let me copy paste from the progress console. Basically there is an error for every other line, not gone into it in any great detail.

If the git is broken is there another repo I can use to get a more up-to-date / working branch.

I was thinking (early days yet and my intention really is to make some games... eventually) that I may give pixel perfect collisions a crack, I had to do this in a python game engine for a project a while ago and I can probably rip the guts out of that.

I've attached the updated drawing files for now, I'll look to doing some work on the missing functions over the next day or sol and then look for something else todo.

EDIT I was going to attach files though it's either broken or I'm not allowed.

Hello, Gringo!

Do you have an account at GitHub? If you do, you can maintain your changes in a fork, and send us pull requests when you are ready to have them included.

What distribution are you on? OpenAL should work if you have it and ALURE installed.

Also, feel free to stop in at the IRC; we are #enigma on Freenode. There's a link to a webchat on the forum listing. We can help you get the audio worked out there.

I believe the split of the drawing functions was a decision made by myself and... I think polygone. Josh was largely uninvolved.

Actually, if you read it carefully, I think this is exactly what we were proposing.

Hey guys,

Josh: I'm running ubuntu 10.04 32 bit, I'll check I have openAL and allure installed, tbh I've not had chance to play today. The drawind stuff has all been done and I've had a further poke around the src to get used to finding my way around.

I may have a crack at either the particles or the pixel perfect collisions, are these best done as an extension or going else where? Both are for purely selfish reasons.

ism:

This is what I went ahead and did any way, I noticed that a member TGMG (I think that's right) did some compile tests way back last year and produced a list of what wasn't implemented function wise and where the priority was (in terms of game crash reasons) does this utility still exist and is it maintained by the community?

TGMG hasn't kept that up to date. The ENIGMA todo list on the wiki is the best place to look, there's a link to a list of needed functions on that page as well:
http://enigma-dev.org/docs/Wiki/ENIGMA:Todo

By the way I advise going on the IRC as it provides much better discourse with the members here. Everyone eventual succumbs to going there, even the unwilling :)
Title: Re: Introductions
Post by: IsmAvatar on April 17, 2012, 10:02:19 pm
Particles would probably be best done as an extension.
Pixel-perfect collisions should go in Collision_Systems.
Title: Re: Introductions
Post by: Josh @ Dreamland on April 19, 2012, 01:04:25 pm
Particles don't need to be extensions. Extensions are for things that manipulate locals.
Title: Re: Introductions
Post by: IsmAvatar on April 19, 2012, 09:56:57 pm
But we don't need the particle module hooked in to games that don't use particles (e.g. > 80% of games). I figured, uncheck it in the Extensions panel, and that makes it not included. Or is ENIGMA/G++ just smart enough to figure out "oh, unused functions. *snip*".

Guess that's a dumb question.
Title: Re: Introductions
Post by: Josh @ Dreamland on April 19, 2012, 10:50:38 pm
It's supposed to be, but it's becoming more and more evident that if I actually want them stripped, I'm going to have to pack them into a static library and just link against it. That way, only bare minimum symbols are even considered.

Point is, theoretically, we shouldn't *need* a system for removing code just because it's unused. Locals, yes. Code, no.

Get on doing that then. Its the reason why I made datatime functions and some other things into extensions in the first place, as I saw that it was still included if not used. I have no problems with using extensions only for locals, but if it includes everything then I have no choice.

I can remake them if you fix this.

Hey guys,
now i've had a chance to play with things a bit more I think while particles are cool a better place to start would be the paper cuts on gm compatibility. I noticed that for instance backgrounds don't have a number of things working and some events seem to be missing. so i'm going to give it a go fixing these first. I'll see how i get on this week and get a git hub acc sorted out. g.

Hello! I'm Safwat1995 and I've been using Game Maker for a long time, I decided to switch to Enigma because GM's developers are only interested in revenue. In my opinion, the coolest feature in Enigma is its' ability to compile code, this is a major advantage over Game Maker. I wrote several tutorials for the Game Maker community and two of them are in the "Staff choice" section. I might move them to these forums one day.

I prefer serious programming languages for big projects, but I do enjoy using GM/Enigma for little things where efficiency is neglectable and all I care about is finishing the job quickly.

Here is my GMC profile: http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showuser=78555
My tutorials can be found in the "about me" section.

Welcome aboard!

We're doing our best to make ENIGMA's flavor of GML into a serious language, because most of us here feel the same way. The idea is to give the language features of C/C++ while preserving features of GML and sprinkling in some features of JavaScript and Python.

Examples are always welcome; if something in particular is preventing them from working, feel free to post a topic and I or another developer will probably help make the needed corrections to ENIGMA.

Cheers

I agree with Poly on life, universe and everything.

Also, parser done yet? I for example still have "Preprocessor_Environment_Editable/IDE_EDIT_objectaccess.h:108:64: error: 'struct enigma::OBJ_obj_controller' has no member named 'light2'" when the obj_controller has light2 and its used in a script which is called from obj_controller. It just pisses me off, as there is no real solution. I end up recoding many parts just to remove that variable from scripts.

Hello, I'm Frog. I have been coding in GameMaker for... well over 5 years. I started back when it was version 6, and have been always wanting to make a good game in it. I  recently started working on a 3D adventure game, coding everything from scratch (including model/animation format), minus the fact that it was running on the kingspace engine (which I eventually want to replace with my own). Anyways, as I wanted to try moving this, and other games to c++, so one day they could maybe be ran on other hardware, I stumbled upon Enigma. This made me happy, and here I am today. As a side hobby, I like to code for the GBA/NDS, and mod gamyboy games.

Hi all
I am Joe.  I have done a little programming in the past.  I have used Blitz 3d, so I got the general idea of how programming works.  I like the idea of drag and drop to help make creating simple games quicker and easier.  I have grown up with Intellivision video games and would like to create those type of games with additional features, such as more options, multiplayer, and adding online and network play.  I have seen that network option will be added in near future, not sure if you have added it yet.   :)  Enima seems to be the best choice for Linux and I like to support the open source world.  Once I learn how to use Enigma I would like to contribute in making tutorials and video tutorials.  This looks like a good project and congrats to all that put work into.  This can be something great!   :)

Sslaxx is the name I go by most places. Played a lot with a lot of game making software, never done much with any of them. Wanting and hoping to change that with ENIGMA though. I've looked around here on-and-off for a while, last time I checked this place ENIGMA was a lot rawer than it is now (think it was back in the R3 days). But never joined. Until today, anyway. Hey guys. I'm CRxTRDude. I've been through many places, I've done some stuff for other game engines like OpenBOR and ZDoom and I've been with Game Maker as well. I found Enigma while searching for engines about two to three years ago but I didn't bother using it that much until it became stable and right now I'm currently testing the waters with Enigma, maybe making a game with this engine.

I hope I could have a nice time here at the forums. I've gone to good communities on the internet and I think this community would be great.

I guess that's all I can say for now.

Welcome. From dev point we will try helping as much as possible. While the ENIGMA engine is quite stable and many ways powerful, there are still instabilities on the IDE and parser (that thing which converts your code, called EDL to C++) side. We are trying to find way to fix it though.

Hello everyone!,

An Game Maker veteran here who refuses to use GMS ever again (after testing 1.4) xP.
Preparing to move my projects to Enigma due my switch of desktop environment (finally getting rid of windows! >:D), increased FPS, and the open-source nature of the project.

My current project is merging old GMK projects (blueburn's tech examples, custom written ambient lighting, a few other things) into one project and make it run as decently.

Besides from programming the whole day in C++ (at my game development study) & GML, I like to watch anime, read manga, learn more about the Japanese culture and history n.n . Im not a gamer (only play games to get inspiration, except when a friend invites me to join him/her).

My native language sadly isn't english, and my appologies for my bad english D:.
At last, feel free to message me whenever you like, but don't expect me to respond quickly ;)

Hi Ozalym and welcome to the forum.
I myself haven't used GM either but it's tutorials work pretty well with Enigma.
Wish you best luck with your project.  :)

It may be a late to introduce myself but I just want to say 'Hello' to everyone in the Forum and the new members as well. I come from a small island in the Caribbean named Barbados. If you've heard of Rihanna, then you've probably heard of of it since this where she came from.

I've been involved in Gamemaker for many years now but I don't consider myself to be a professional.........let just say I'm well versed in it. It's only been recent that I decided to become a full-time developer to produce LINUX games as there is a great demand for them. Using ENIGMA is a major step but as time I plan to be good enough to push ENIGMA even further.

It's never too late to introduce yourself (I guess)

So, my story is a little bit different. My first steps in programming where actually done in GM (don't know if it was 7 or 8, it was a pirated copy) It basically teached me everything I needed know without going too much into the details. My main interest at the time was 3D programming. Since then I learned many new languages like C++ or C#. My main interest is still in 3D, thus I learned how to use OpenGL. The other thing I'm interested in are compilers, which is why I love this project so much. It has many flaws, but it is amazing how well it turned out, even without much support (moneywise) However I turned my back on GameMaker, because I can't live without the features other IDEs and languages provide (argumentN is such a crappy design) and I love developing engines myself. I just sometimes have a look at the forums (GMC, Enigma, GM-D <- german forum), because I want to see what other people have achieved with the limitations of GM.

Have a nice day!
