Off-Topic / Re: Restructuring the Community
« on: September 24, 2014, 12:15:11 pm »
Expect something like that no matter what, on any community. You have your die-hard fanboys, competition and others. To me this is a comment of a hardcore GM fanboy who is attached to the product. Who has made quick judgement on the surface and only decided to tune in to the negative aspect.
A forum is by all means not representative of a product necessarily. I am a user of many products and yet I don't participate in their forums, but their forums is quite a mess and full of hate, etc......yet the product is good. So this could apply. I think ENIGMA has a specific market, it's a work in progress, and might turn off many people, especially those who are not willing to work around things, learn about code, etc.
Some RANDOM person showing up and bashing you, you got to then turn around and ask them if they actually used the product and how can it be made better....
You got to ask them to evaluate the number of updates and fixes and the fact developers actually discuss and listen to their users vs. another company they so defend.....
On the topic of forums, yes I do believe every forum should have rules to some extent. I also believe a forum should have dedicated sections to talk about general or other stuff, like any forum, and perhaps a sub forum not visible to new users or unregistered viewers, available to developers or long time users/posters, etc.
I don't believe in censorship, just common sense.
As far as hate - that is censorship territory, but again ti depends on the context..... You have 2 types of people,
1) Those who make personal attacks, hate others, insults, discredit and only spend their time degrading people, particularly newbies,etc... Sounds familiar ? Only recently some people were called out by name on the GMC.......
2) Those who constantly complain and hate yet offer no arguments. Mostly one liners and such...... IN a forum you need a blend of good and bad, but to some extent the bad can be helpful - if hate about something is backed up with arguments as to WHY a user hates something and provide something reasonable and factual.
3) Sub forums - dedicated forums on the product itself and only that and other sub forums on general discussion...... Nobody should be turned off if visiting the right forums........they should not visit non product related forums otherwise, or they would have no right to "complain" about a community and should go elsewhere.
So yes the PRODUCT itself and its forums related to such, should be attractive, professional and respectful. Obviously you are not going to post about your exploits and encounters inside a programming forum......
Should forums have rules ? YES. It's good for its owners and users.
Should forums be moderated ? YES. (Note, there is a difference between moderation and censorship).
Should some forum areas be invisible to non members or new members ? YES ! YES! YES! (meaning non product related areas).
And finally, I think most forums should add this disclaimer, I know I would on mine.
"The comments posted on this forum are those of their respective authors and do not necessarily represent the views of ENIGMA developers".
As to onpon: Are you offended by the term "GayMaka Stupido" because you don't like these terms used OR you are a fan of GameMaker Studio ?" The first time I ever heard this was years ago, from an actual GM user, employing those terms.... The same way some people on the other side used "creative" terms to describe ENIGMA
Personally I don't judge a product by its forum. When I joined the forum it was in the middle of flame wars between developers and some users.....But I saw potential in the product. I guess I can see why some skeptics or die hard fans of GM would think the way they do.... One would really need solid intentions for something new to make the move, but most people don't probably realise that the product is so similar....... (by looks)
This is where closed areas would benefit. Also I agree with you to SOME extent, I think racism, slurs, homophobia and crude language should be left off the source code...... It is not a requirement to be a forum member to use ENIGMA.....So at least keeping the source code free of such AND the documentation / site itself.
Fact is Robert and company have done more to an open source project recently than YYG has done in an extended period of time fixing stuff, breaking stuff, changing their mind etc..... I guess some people have ways of expressing themselves

« on: September 24, 2014, 12:38:22 am »Anyway it most probably would have to be a fork or ENIGMAStudio or something like that.
If you drop GM compatibility then ENIGMA would not fit at all, you would need a new name,

replace it. Did you know here in México we still use DVD's?, most of my relatives haven't gotten around to buying a BR-Player, and that includes people that can very well damn afford to do so, now
Well if you have switched to flat screen TV HD then you are not doing it justice with that DVD player You would be blown away with BR......and besides BR also plays DVDs, and amazingly well too. My Sony BR player does a damn good job at playing my DVDs, better than the scaling of my previous DVD players.
Quote
think that about half the mexican people live in poverty, and there are a lot of countries where the situation is much more dire.
True, these countries will hang on a bit longer to old technology......but otherwise technology is moving at a fast pace.....Have you ever been to Japan ? You should see some of the gadgets they have there, they are way ahead, compared to North America.....things are moving fast.
Quote
Of course if you're a die hard Mac fanboy and will buy anything they produce you will make the switch to what they tell you to, but most of the world isn't like that.
I think you are mistaking me with someone else I am a PC person, not at all a MAC fanboy..... and I won't switch.
if worse comes to worse I will fire up my Commodore 64 - I'm sure some parts of the world still sell them and I'll be developing there.....I'm fluent in BASIC and ASM6502 so I have no problem going back to my roots

Not gonna happen any time soon if ever, microsoft may switch the "free" apps that come with the OS to a cloud based use, but nobody is going to buy/rent Office if it works on the cloud, why? Because if somebody hacks their servers they can have access to stuff you don't want anyone to see (Porn, love letters to your mistress, financial stuff, etc.); so again
Apps on the cloud will be popular and the new trend......Your documents, personal shite etc will remain on your local storage......This part will be optional. The core APP itself will be on the cloud.
Besides you are using the cloud every single day and don't realise it. Where the heck do you think all your e-mails are stored........
Quote
And most important, it won't happen so soon if ever.
Mind you apps on the cloud might not be a bad thing - providing ISPs offer reasonable bandwidth caps or unlimited and the price is right. It means no bloat and no installing all the crap on your system....but it means reliance on an active internet connection........internet outage, can't run the app.
Apps on the cloud will be the norm sooner than you think, it might be the ultimate way to combat piracy as no matter what copy protection scheme used, activation, server side ,etc, it gets cracked and defeated.

Finished Games / Re: Laboratory Escape 3D
« on: September 24, 2014, 12:25:42 am »I agree, TKG is pretty good about bringing out very polished games relatively fast.
Polished and shiny you could eat off the floors But I was kinda hoping for more than 2 minute game play
So did you finish the game / escape ?
Having completed it I know for sure, 100%, this can be done in ENIGMA from scratch.....perfect examples of games that could be done in ENIGMA, with potential of adding pre-rendered CG, video and advanced features you see in commercial games.

Update: Ok I was stuck but it was not my fault, your game does not scale at all to resolution, so I had bottom part of room cut off preventing me from going further.....Fixed it by playing at full native monitor resolution........aced the game, would have done it 1st try.
My comments: I like these type of games, though yours has to be the EASIEST, SHORTEST game I have ever played and if someone can't manage to complete it I would seriously be worried
In your game description you call this insanely difficult, YIKES, I would hate to see you play an actually difficult puzzle based game !
Nice concept brings memories of point and click, try to make a sequel or something a tad longer (say longer than 1-2 minute gameplay) more difficulty, more challenge, an actual inventory system.
But you are definitely capable, if you could make this game and others I seen you really do have the ability.
If I had time I'd help you out, I have the coding skill and eventually have an engine in mind for development for adventure games/point and click/3d, a full inventory system, interaction etc......and resource handling / encryption for handling massive games, I could easily team up with some artist or someone who can provide renders and combine ideas and make a really nice game.

« on: September 23, 2014, 11:37:48 pm »Now those are some mighty big shoes to fill, I'm not sure I'd be up for the challenge. I can and will collaborate with the project but I doubt anybody would be onboard with me leadding, especially since I would drop GM compatibility so fast you couldn't see it happen, and also I would go for a compiled IDE.
You'd get my 100% support on this one, and I'm sure many here would do the same. Providing the program is feature rich (equal or better), properly documented function, easy/fast, it would be great. The only people who will disagree are those who want to port their games or don't realise the downfall of such compatibility

If you really believe that ENIGMA will be obsolete in 4 years you should drop it now
Why not enjoy the good days whilst they last. In 4 years we'll be shitting in smart toilets, have smart toaster ovens, smart door knobs, smart everything.....lot of things will be obsolete, including desktop, PCs, CPU architecture as we know it, lots will change....Mighty ENIGMA would be running in "EMULATION" mode....People will be too busy with SHITTY apps and mobility to care about desktop game dev tools........
Or perhaps in 4 years it will be called ENIGMA Cloud.....Since everything will reside on the cloud, your OS, your applications, etc. Welcome to the tyranny of technology, the sham to come, where people will be controlled and no longer have a choice......BIG brother will be watching, and you won't have ANYMORE liberties, not even to piss.
So enjoy your 4 years, you will probably need another 4 to get up to date with new technology, new CPU architecture and re-learn everything. If you don't believe me of what's to come is DIRE,
then look up remote viewing, I've done it and I don't see people using windows desktops in that time span.......Just look at smart watches, it's only the beginning of craziness.

LOL whatever.......They should never have removed it in the first place.
BTW I am planning some really cool things for ENIGMA soon, it has to do with resources handling and I'm sure you and many big game developers will love.

TKG, as I sent you in PM I guess that explains why I had problems with your game, the portion where I had to pick up items was cut off, your game area was not scaled properly to the display resolution I was using.....which was solved when I set my screen to full native mode......and all this bloody time I was struggling

He means once you are finished with your CSE, in a few years time you can fill his shoes and take over ENIGMA (and the world too )
By the time you finish your course, ENIGMA (and GMS) will probably be so obsolete and forgotten anyway as the mobility CRAZE takes over and shitty apps take over the world and those who still insist on desktops will be shoved mobility interface down their throats. basically running everything in emulation mode

Yeah he makes games, shiny floors and walls too, that takes skill and creativity....not a given, he's smarter than he gives himself credit though.....game developer, music composer, etc. he might have a future in film making
I read LoneWolf (Jason Soup Campbell) review, hey at least he made constructive criticism, maybe his intentions were to actually help, nice report he made, he could have just said "it sucks" or one liner but he gave lots of feedback. But he gave you one star, that was harsh
I think you had every reason to be suspicious of him, don't feel bad about it, him coming here asking about the video and suddenly vanishing, deleting his account and all posts, that would strike as highly suspicious, so is selling a video extension for $999, I mean Christ, he sure didn't defend himself or deny anything other than delete his accounts and vanish.
So don't feel bad. As long as his review is FACTUAL, what he claims was true, you can't really have it removed, you can consider it constructive criticism - that's to be expected in a market place - some people will maliciously down rate you, others will back up their claims, though I don't think you both will kiss and make out anytime soon though, but fuck it, you are better than him, he had us all fooled here and let's leave it at that.
Cheers

lol - you have a nice way of marketing your products....unusual but unique, (i.e. you mention on your site about it being a point and click piece of turd, etc.) Well, it is better than most of the crap people make ... but it's inspiring, this way people cannot make negative comments without you saying "hey I told you so!"
Would be a great game to be done in actual 3D (FPS).......
Though I like the idea of point and click, this is something I want to get into when and if I have time, I had started working on a P&C engine a while back but lacked time.
BTW, that 2nd screen shot, those 3 things, red, green, blue, look like giant dildos.........

Developing ENIGMA / Re: Change
« on: September 21, 2014, 12:06:37 pm »The don't read the ENIGMA engine's code, because that thing has turned into a monster as well. Because all we cared about was features and bugfixes, not how pretty it all was. But many things got rewritten to be more readable.
Well, I'm sure YoYoGames had the same reaction when they took over (and later destroyed) GameMaker, and to be honest I don't see them re-writing anything from scratch anytime soon, they already have GMS 2 on board and ready for next year. So don't feel bad. A complete re-write of ENIGMA would probably take insane amount of time and unrealistic, but hey, OpenSource project, with multiple contributors, that's to be expected no?
