Issues Help Desk / Re: Create games for mobile platforms is possible with enigma??
« on: January 16, 2015, 04:53:15 pm »So this is STILL and will always be an issue with stability regardless of how many functions you add... of course someone would need enough time and skill to completely port LGM to C++ and finish it.
It seems overkill to me. Java is not the real problem, but something we don't know exactly in the plug-in. Your solution makes me thing we have a castle with a bridge, and as the bridge is not stable, instead of remplacing the bridge we build a new castle instead !

As we are speaking of the stability issue with the Lgm plugin, i wonder if it would not be possible to replace it with the Command Line Interface project ? : http://enigma-dev.org/forums/index.php?topic=2047.0

Again, that's not your fault and we can't change the past. I think the creators of Enigma were over optimistic and didn't see the huge work needed to do this project. I can't say i would have done a better work. It's already amazing what they have accomplished. I don't have a miracle solution, but i think if you start such a project, instead of wanting to implement everything, it would be wiser to do first the core, and make sure the documentation is up to date. But of course this is more easy to say than to do it !

I don't say that's your fault, Robert, i am just trying to explain why we don't have more developers on this project.
In case none of you remember, this is LGM just 2 years ago.
That's why i said many times you have done an outstanding work. Again in my explanation i wrote once a negative aspect of your work, BUT most of all i said very positive things. Again you've heard from me mostly the word gratitude !

« on: January 16, 2015, 07:48:04 am »Why hasn't more been done with it? I've come to assume there just is not enough interest.
Let me be the devil's advocate for once. (As i have been also a big advocate of Enigma cause ) What you are telling is part of the problem, but i don't think it's the main problem. There are many problems in Enigma which prevent many people to get really interested. It has been poorly documented, had many bugs and had many functions not really unimplemented. If some functions are not implemented, that would not be a big problem IF it is documented, but very often it is not the case. In my experience on working as a developer on LateralGM, i've seen a lot of code without any comments and with poor naming (variables : a,b,c,etc). For an open-source project, that sucks. Also the relation between developers has not been always easy, if you remember : developers 'insulting' each other, saying that anyway they were leaving the project. But fortunately, this is a thing of the past. I feel also that often developers are working on their own without caring much of what the others are doing.
Also let me say that i always felt a lot of gratitude for all the work you have done. You spent so much time doing support, motivating and giving positive feedbacks to new users and you have done an outstanding work in many areas, but also often you are starting too much tasks at the same time without really finishing them. For instance, you started to work on constants, but you left reading of egm files broken and at first you were not concerned also to keep the compatibility of gmx projects saved with old versions of LateralGM. That will leave a very bad impression to users (I know that you didn't update the portable, but for linux users for instance, they will get the latest version of LateralGM). I don't pretend to be perfect, and of course i am doing mistakes too, but at least i try to do tests as much as i can and i feel we should do more testing before releasing new versions. My goal is not to rant against personally developers here but to make constructive critics in order to improve the situation.
To conclude it's not surprising that Enigma doesn't have more developers. Now, i want to say also that the situation has improved a lot thanks to your help, and with sorlok and all Enigma developers help. So i hope enigma future will still be brilliant.

Off-Topic / Re: An article about Enigma on 'Gaming on linux'
« on: January 12, 2015, 05:10:37 am »That's actually really good news, someone else was posting about LateralGM on their blog.
http://gawasy.blogspot.com/
Either way it's still a step forward.
In this case, i doubt it's really positive : the guy said he tried Enigma and he is complaining that Enigma has a lot of a bugs, poor documentation and unimplemented functions. So he left Enigma and uses another tool I would say he's not totally wrong, but fortunately the situation is improving all the time.

Developing ENIGMA / Re: New Portable
« on: January 10, 2015, 04:58:52 pm »
Thanks to Josh help, i could include smoother version of the new icons. Also this time i've used Inkscape to export correctly svg icons to png, instead of using a snapshot.
Here is the new toolbar :
In contrast mode :
The icons look a little bit better in real. On the forum they look too blurry.
The pull request : https://github.com/IsmAvatar/LateralGM/pull/212
Robert, if the icons are fine for you, i would be grateful if you could make a new portable version. This would include my selection tool and the support of constants.

Enigma-Dev is a fully featured game engine that compiles natively for Linux!
Enigma is completely compatible with GML (the GameMaker Language), as well as C and C++. It is developed and written in Java, and can cross-compile to Linux, Mac, and Windows. It is a "work in progress" currently, but can compile full games. There are several bug in the engine, but most of them you can just bypass.
Pros
- Full Box-2d implementation
- Game controller support
- Open Source
- Can open and edit most GameMaker 6 through to GM Studio files
Cons
- Many bugs currently, mainly a startup error (can be bypassed)
- No built-in image editor, but GIMP works great!
- Does crash occasionally
- Can take a bit to get set up and running
Once this is in a more stable state, I am sure it can be a giant competitor to GameMaker. It's also funny to see the community bring a GameMaker compatible editor to Linux.
You can find the package in the Arch User Repository, but not in Debian/Ubuntu repositories.
http://enigma-dev.org/
Tip: If you don't use a Arch based distro, you have to open the lateralgm.jar file through the terminal with java -jar ./lateralgm If you don't the program will not be able to locate a few files.

With Moore's law, what seems terrific today, will be standard tomorrow and it will suck after tomorrow.
Back in the past, the following was state of the art and needed monster hardware :

General ENIGMA / Re: Improving rooms editor
« on: December 30, 2014, 04:41:25 am »
I have updated the wiki : http://enigma-dev.org/docs/Wiki/Room_Editor and added a paragraph about the the tile's layers. It was important to add this paragraph, as the selection tool is linked to tile layers : when you copy a tiles selection, it will copy by default only tiles of the selected layer, except if the option 'Edit other layers' is checked.
Now i have finished to work on LateralGM, and you will not hear me anymore for a while on the rooms editor !

I added the undo when a region is filled, deleted, or pasted, or when all tiles or all instances are deleted in the room.
Edit:
Also adding undo when deleting a tile's layer.

I've modified the way we select objects : it takes into account now the relative position of the mouse within the object. This prevents a shifting when an object is selected. I think it's much more precise.

Proposals / Improving object selection
« on: December 28, 2014, 12:59:46 pm »
If there is an object whose size is bigger than the size of a grid's cell (e.g instance size is 32, and cell's size is 16) :
If you select it with the mouse with a position which is not near the left top corner of the object, at first it will be shifted :
This means it looks a little bit jerky when you start to move the object. I propose to remove this effect (the same as GM Studio). If you select the object in the middle, for instance, the mouse cursor will stay in the middle of the object.
